The State and Future of the Orthopaedic Industry - Executive Interview

What does the future hold for the orthopaedic industry? The executive panel discussion returns to offer perspective on new materials, emerging technologies and commercialization solutions. The panel members' backgrounds—R&D, sales, business development and surgical application—provide a unique perspective on how these trends are being adopted and applied within the orthopaedic industry. The Wednesday Keynote opens OMTEC, providing a high-level overview of topics to be discussed in greater depth throughout the two days.
Kohrs 2015 WEB Doug Kohrs, Past President and CEO, Tornier N.V.

Mr. Kohrs has more than 30 years of experience in the medical device industry, primarily as a founder or executive of innovative companies. He served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Tornier N.V. from 2006 to 2012, and Chief Executive Officer and President of American Medical Systems Holdings, Inc. from 1999 to 2005. Since 2013, he has served as Managing Director of Responsive Orthopedics, a new company focused on value based healthcare solutions.

He also currently serves as the President of the Foundation for Essential Needs and serves on the Board of Directors of Proto Labs, Bio2 Technologies, MedShape and Innova Spine. He is additionally Chairman of the Board of Tenex Health, SEED Partners and SmartZyme Innovation. Mr. Kohrs has previously served on the boards of ev3, Kyphon, Tornier, American Medical Systems, Pioneer Surgical, SpineCore and InHealth.

Mr. Kohrs holds a B.S. in Bioengineering from Texas A&M University, a B.A. in Engineering Sciences from Austin College and an MBA from Northeastern University.

Bal 2015 WEB 

B. Sonny Bal, M.D., J.D., Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, AMEDICA

Dr. Bal has served on AMEDICA’s Board of Directors since February 2012, as Chairman of the board since August 2014 and as President and Chief Executive Officer since October 2014. He is Professor and Chief of Adult Reconstruction at the University of Missouri - Columbia and Adjunct Professor of Material Sciences at the University of Missouri at Rolla. Dr. Bal is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the International Society of Technology in Arthroplasty. He also serves on the editorial board of several peer-refereed orthopaedic journals and has published extensively on the biomedical applications of silicon nitride ceramics. He continues that work with presentations at scientific forums worldwide.

Dr. Bal received his M.D. from Cornell University, an MBA from Northwestern University and a J.D. from the University of Missouri.

Mayer 2015 WEB  Rod K. Mayer, President, Nextremity Solutions, Inc. 

Mr. Mayer has served in the orthopaedic industry since 1977, most recently as President of Nextremity Solutions as of February 2013. Mr. Mayer started his orthopaedic career with DePuy, spending 18 years in various roles. His history in the industry includes extensive experience in sales, distribution and business development. In 2002, Mr. Mayer founded DVO Extremity Solutions LLC, a company focused upon development and commercialization of innovative products for the upper extremity market. Mr. Mayer co-led the development, growth and eventual sale of DVO to Tornier in March 2007. He then served as Vice President of Sales Execution and was a member of Tornier’s executive management team. Mr. Mayer also co-founded Del Palma Orthopedics, a product development company, for which he was named President and CEO in April 2009 and currently serves as a Director. Mr. Mayer also serves on the Board of Conventus Orthopedics.

Gall 2015

Ken Gall, Ph.D., Founder and CTO, MedShape Inc. 

Ken Gall, Ph.D., is currently the Chair of the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Department at Duke University. Professor Gall’s technical expertise is in the mechanical properties of materials, and his contributions to the scientific community range from the discovery of a new phase transformation in gold nanowires to the creation and understanding of several new functional biomaterials. He has over 180 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited over 6,500 times, and his publication H-index is 53. In addition to his research and teaching, he has consulted for various organizations including Sandia National Lab, Johnson & Johnson, Abbott Labs, Boston Scientific, W.L. Gore, the U.S. Military and the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Dr. Gall is a passionate entrepreneur who has several dozen patents and has founded two medical device start-up companies, MedShape and Vertera. He is actively involved in both companies who are commercializing university technologies in the orthopaedic medical device space.
