What are the next innovations in orthopedic coatings? What orthopedic market stands to benefit the most from coatings? What’s stalling coating innovation? This session brings together the device company and coating manufacturer perspective to discuss which coatings will be used in orthopedics in the next decade. It starts with three eight-minute research-based presentations on coatings, including ceramic and thin HA. A panel discussion and audience Q&A will follow.

Speakers

Ulf Brogren leads Promimic’s Sales Operations in North America. Prior to moving to the U.S. to lead the company’s North America business in 2017, Mr. Brogren served as Promimic’s CEO.

Byron Masi, Ph.D., is Associate Director R&D Global Alignment, U.S. Innovation at Aesculap. He began his orthopedic industry career at Smith & Nephew in Andover, Massachusetts, where he was a member of their technology incubator responsible for vetting the technical, clinical and commercial viability of platform technologies. His current responsibilities at Aesculap include ensuring R&D alignment with the global organization and international affiliates. Additionally, he is responsible for the process by which U.S.-only projects are proposed, vetted, approved and monitored.

Christopher Scifert, Ph.D., has more than 19 years of experience in orthopedics and currently serves as Director of Engineering at the Memphis, Tennessee division of Orchid Design. He previously served as senior manager of product development at Medtronic Spinal and Biologics, where he executed engineering projects and group management responsibilities for intradiscal and extradiscal dynamic stabilization systems and semi-rigid tumor/trauma technologies. Dr. Scifert is a certified Lean Sigma green belt and supported the continuing improvement efforts during his tenure at Medtronic. Dr. Scifert’s experience includes management of engineering projects as a Senior Engineer and Project Manager at Smith & Nephew, focusing on early intervention knee and shoulder systems. He received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa with his doctoral dissertation, titled “A Finite Element Investigation into the Biomechanics of Total Artificial Hip Dislocation.”
