Description

The control of surface properties to reduce wear and corrosion and improve biocompatibility is of particular interest today as device companies—and surgeons, payors and patients—seek to extend the life of knee and hip implants. In this session, device companies will share research on their joint replacement coatings and materials, covering pros, cons and the future of their technology. A panel discussion on the future of coatings in joint replacement will follow, as well as an audience Q&A.

Speakers

Moderator
Parimal Bapat, Ph.D., develops and investigates new coatings technologies as a Research Engineer at Orchid Orthopedic Solutions. As a Graduate Research Assistant at the Center for Nanoscale Material and Biointegration at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, he worked toward his Ph.D. thesis, “Gas Phase Laser Synthesis of Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications.” His primary goal was development of a physical vapor deposition technique for synthesizing aggregation-free, size controlled calcium phosphate particles that could be used for biomedical applications. Among Dr. Bapat’s expertise is nanomaterial characterization techniques. He is an active ASTM member.

Panelists
Gordon Hunter, Ph.D., is Principal Manager, Material Science at Smith & Nephew, where he has worked for over 25 years. He manages standardization of materials and manufacturing processes used to make orthopedic devices and is involved with commercial implementation of new materials and processes. Dr. Hunter led the development and implementation of the OXINIUM oxidized zirconium knee and hip prostheses, and continues to coordinate efforts involving that technology. He also works with polyethylene, bone ingrowth surfaces and powder metal technologies. Dr. Hunter graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in Metallurgy and an SM/SB in Materials Engineering. He received the 2017 ASTM Ogden Award for accomplishments in reactive and refractory alloy technology, and the 2005 ASM Engineering Materials Achievement Award for development of OXINIUM implants. He has 22 US patents and over 50 technical publications.
